From January 2009, American stretched limousines in Northern Ireland are to be licensed by the Driver Vehicle Agency (DVA). These vehicles are not currently licensed for use in Northern Ireland by the DVA for the carriage of passengers for hire and reward.

While there is support for the action by the DVA to regulate and license these vehicles, there is concern about the conditions of fitness for such vehicles from a safety point of view. For instance, what will be the rules on emergency exits, numbers of passengers carried, the configuration of the seats, seat belts, glass cocktail cabinets, left hand drives, and the age of the particular vehicles?

In fact members of the public are being encouraged to put forward their safety concerns to the DVA direct, prior to the licensing of these vehicles, in order to make sure that they are roadworthy. They are also being to provide any evidence of accidents or breakdowns involving American stretched limousines.

In the UK the popularity of stretch limousines has soared in recent years, as a result the government has tightened control regulations on stretch limousines to make sure they meet safety and licensing standards; pre-registration checks make sure all new vehicles with more than eight passenger seats comply with the guidelines; tachographs and speed limiters are required, by law, for limos registered or licensed to carry over eight passengers. This became mandatory in January 2008.
