Future of Luxury Touring Cars
While there were numerous luxury car releases at Paris Motor Show, the main interest lay in the new range of hybrids vehicles. Although there have been plenty of ‘almost made it to production’ hybrids, like the Peugeot Prologue, for example and ‘actual’ production hybrids, like the Honda Insight, making news was a luxury concept car from Renault.
And while some may say it’s rather an outlandish vision of what a six-seat luxury tourer might look like in the future, Renault have called their concept car the Ondelios. According to Renault, the concept car’s bizarre shape is aerodynamically inspired. As such, the Ondelios has a drag coefficient of just 0.29, and that rather bizarre rear end is what you end up with in a luxury six seat tourer when you minimise drag without compromising headroom in the rear. Powered by a two-litre turbo diesel supported by two electric motors, the concept car is good for a 0-60 time of just under eight seconds and CO2 emissions of just 120g/km.
The Ondelios is designed for people who love to travel and who expect comfort and refinement that comes with a luxury tourer. The car epitomizes Renault’s vision of the high-end crossover. With the new tourer Renault has managed to combine luxury and a comfortable ride with respect for the environment. Renault’s vision for the future can be seen in the concept car’s ethereal design, its interior layout, and an original hybrid power train.
The cars sleek design is made for the open road. Drawing inspiration from the world of aviation design, the 4.8-metre-long, 1.6-metre high Ondelios delivers high drag efficiency. The long-distance luxury tourer not only boasts sleek, smooth, amazingly fluid lines that make it appear as though it glides over the ground, it embodies Renault’s vision of what a luxury futuristic tourer should be.
Clever use of glass and metal make the car look like it is almost made from a single material; the body and glazed areas appear to merge into one continuos panel. The glazed roof allows natural light to bath the interior. While, the butterfly-type side doors, which also feature an extensive glazed area, add a further touch of elegance to the car’s overall styling. While, the steeply raked windscreen, extending down the bonnet, further accentuates the car’s futuristic theme and gives us a glimpse of what the automobile might be in the medium term future.
